Why open-top

A hard carrier solves the human's problem. It contains the animal. From inside, it is a dark box with a grille, arriving somewhere they did not choose to go — which is why so many cats learn that the carrier means the vet, and stop going near it years before they need to.

An open tote changes the deal. Their head is out, they can see where they are going, and crucially there is no door, so it is not a trap. Plenty of cats settle better on that basis. The internal clip is what makes it workable: it attaches to a harness, so an animal that startles cannot simply leave.

Honest limits: this is not the right carrier for every animal. A cat that panics in the open, or one that has never worn a harness, is safer in a covered carrier. Nervous animals need the introduction below, not a first outing to the vet. And an open top is not secure enough for air travel or an unrestrained car journey.

Introducing it

Leave it out

On the floor, open, with a blanket that already smells of them inside. Do not put them in it.

Let them find it

Give it a few days. Treats in it, then near it, then in it again. Their idea, not yours.

Clip and lift

Harness on, clip attached, pick the bag up for ten seconds indoors. Put it down. Repeat.

Short first trip

Five minutes around the block, then home. Do not make the first outing a vet visit.

Using it safely. Always clip the internal strap to a properly fitted harness, never to a collar — a collar can choke an animal that jumps. Never leave a pet in the tote unattended, in a parked car, or in direct sun. Check the weight rating against your animal before you buy: an overloaded bag stresses the seams and the strap. Not suitable for air travel or as a car restraint.

Care

Spot-clean the outer with a damp cloth and mild soap. The base pad lifts out and washes separately. Air-dry both — a tumble dryer will distort the padding and pull the bag out of shape.

Questions

What size pet does it fit?

Measure your animal rather than guessing from breed — they need room to sit upright and turn around. If they are at the top of the range, size up to a different carrier.

Will my cat's neck be safe with their head out?

Yes, provided you use the internal clip with a harness rather than a collar. The opening is not a restraint and does not close around the neck — your pet sits in the bag and looks out of it. The clip is what stops them leaving, and a harness spreads any force across the chest.

Does the strap hurt after a while?

The strap is padded and wide to spread the load, but this is still a bag with an animal in it. For anything longer than a walk to the shops, a backpack-style carrier is kinder to your shoulder.

Can I wash the whole thing?

Not in a machine. Spot-clean the outer; the base pad comes out and can be washed on its own. Air-dry.

Can I fly with it?

No. An open-top tote will not meet airline carrier requirements, and we would not recommend it for an unrestrained car journey either. It is for walks, errands and short trips on foot.

What if it does not suit my cat?

Send it back unused and in original condition within 30 days for a refund. If it arrives damaged, photograph it and email info@goodforgirlz.com — we will replace it and you keep the damaged one.
